Vancouver 2010

This summer we took a great trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada!  We enjoyed exploring the beautiful city as well as nearby Whistler Mountain.  Here are a few highlights:

Taken from the seawall along False Creek, one our favorite areas of the city.

Canada Place - Where cruise ships dock.

This sculpture is at the Vancouver Convention Center.
This is where Vancouver hosted the media during the 2010
Winter Olympics - remember the 'torch?'

The Aqua Bus is the way to Granville Island - a great Artisan Community!

A look back at Vancouver from False Creek and then from Granville Island.

See if you can guess what this next building might be.

Got it yet?

It is . . . . The Vancouver Public Library.
Steve and Greg spent an afternoon here while Elise and I did some shopping!

Of Course we shopped on the famous Robson Street and guess what we found?!!

Tiffany's!  And we learned how to spend the Loonies and Toonies!

Also within the city, we found plenty of variety in food.  Asian cuisine was very popular and plentiful in Vancouver!

You just never knew what you would find at the fresh market!

Sometimes the octopi are really cute!

No Forks Allowed!

The short rib bowl and soup was delicious!

Another market surprise!  How about a camel slider?

I had to campaign pretty hard for this one, but eventually everyone
agreed to try the Japadog and it was great!

Mine was topped with kelp.

As always, the west coast has an abundance of beautiful fruits and veggies.

I have no idea what these are - fruit/veggie but they were beautiful!

Every kind of berry that you can imagine!

These are champagne grapes - so, so tiny!

We found the local fresh markets to be fascinating places.  You could go into a market and find fresh products from a wide variety of cultures.  One day we went to the market for lunch and feasted on Greek, French and Asian foods.  We really enjoyed sampling from the different cuisines.

Vancouver is a great city for walking, biking, skating and boating.  We spent two days touring along the English Bay on bikes and continuing on through Stanley Park.

This is the seawall portion of the bike trail which runs along False Creek, which
feeds into English Bay.

Elise and Greg ready for the big ride.

The sculpture "We" just along the bike path.  This is a bit interactive in that you can walk inside the sculpture and sit on 'benches' that are incorporated into the sculpture.  Click on the pic to enlarge.

Taking in the scenery and a bit of a break along the trail.

Totem Poles in Stanley Park

At this point, we had biked the entire perimeter of Stanley Park

This is a map of Stanley Park, as you can see, the park is almost completely surrounded by water.  This made for a beautiful ride.  Some areas of the trail were narrow and very close to the water with a few rocky cliffs along the way.

The sights along the bike path were fascinating!

One evening, we enjoyed fireworks on English Bay with about 300,000 people.

We set aside one day to explore Whitstler Mountain, another Olympic site.

Here we are on the top of Whistler Mountain!

The ride to the top was cool and breezy with plenty of snow below.

This was a very steep incline!

We saw black bears on the way back down the mountain where is was warm and sunny.
(Click on the pic to get a closer look at the bear.)

On our way back to the city, we stopped at Shannon Falls.

The falls look as if they just appear from the sky.

I found some very interesting people at the falls!

Back in the city of Vancouver, there was also a great array of entertainment.  From Shakespeare to Improv!

At Bard on the Beach, we saw Much Ado About Nothing.  The play was performed in a big top tent with the bay in the background of the stage.

Then for something a bit more contemporary, we took in an improvisational comedy show on Granville Island, just across the False Creek.

This really was a great trip with lots of exploration and new sights around every corner!
